Shut out of formal jobs after more than three years of civil war, young Sudanese are turning to art and small businesses to get by, according to an Al Jazeera report published on Wednesday.
Yousra Hussein’s career was on the rise before the fighting came. She graduated from Nahda College in 2022 with a degree in medical laboratory sciences, and that same year she started a women’s empowerment initiative she called Golden Women in Nyala, a city in western Sudan.
Golden Women organized psychosocial support sessions and training workshops in marketing and entrepreneurship. More than 70 women have taken part. Ms. Hussein set out to reach young women much like herself: women looking for work who often did not have the experience or the practical skills that available openings demanded.
Her project now runs in a country at war. The conflict began in April 2023, pitting the national army against the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, and it has driven more than 14 million people from their homes, Al Jazeera has reported, pushing them out of formal and informal work alike.
