# The Woman Who Knelt Before a Fake Ukrainian Torture Chamber

*A staged rescue outside Kyiv went viral in hours; the real injuries inside a National Guard house are still unexplained.*

## In brief

- A woman dressed as a paramedic claimed 40 draft evaders were tortured in a house near Kyiv on 2 November
- Valentyna Moloda, 49, was arrested and is held without bail for 60 days over the staged rescue
- The rumor reached about 110 Russian Telegram channels and over 4 million views within hours
- Police counted 26 people inside the house; four men had injuries still under investigation
- Complaints about Ukraine’s draft offices to the ombudsman rose from 18 in 2022 to 6,127 in 2025

Forty men held and tortured, one of them already dead: that was the claim that spread out of a two-story house in Petropavlivska Borshchahivka, a Kyiv suburb, on November 2. Kyiv Oblast police, who eventually got inside, counted 26 people in the building. The gap between those two numbers is the story: a rumor seeded hours earlier turned into a riot of roughly 500 people, left 16 National Guard soldiers injured, and produced a case that Ukraine’s domestic intelligence service (SBU) says involved about 100 active participants and three separate criminal investigations.

The claim’s source was Valentyna Moloda, 49, who arrived by ambulance dressed as a paramedic, knelt in front of police at the gate, and after being let inside briefly emerged describing, as [Al Jazeera reported](https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2026/11/6/claims-of-a-ukrainian-torture-chamber-went-viral-what-really-happened), “a man on the brink of death, another with a broken spine and one who was so badly beaten he was unable to talk,” plus blood on mattresses and men urinating into bottles. Moloda was arrested the next day and is being held without bail for 60 days.

None of her credentials checked out. Al Jazeera described her as a nurse who had once worked at a plastic-surgery clinic; the investigative outlet Slidstvo.info, cited in [Euromaidan Press’s reconstruction](https://euromaidanpress.com/2026/11/04/a-fake-torture-chamber-a-real-riot-russia-scores-points-on-ukraines-mobilization-crisis/), says she was not a nurse at all but the clinic’s owner — the two accounts disagree on her actual job. The ambulance carried the logo of a private medical firm that stopped operating in 2023 and was sold in 2024; its new owner had to strip the old markings off the vehicle. The paramedic uniform’s real owner, who runs an actual emergency-medicine center, said Moloda never worked there and had bought or sewn the uniform herself.

Military intelligence chief Kyrylo Budanov said Moloda and her driver had scouted the house at least three days before the incident and had been in contact with administrators of anti-mobilization Telegram channels. The political scientist Volodymyr Fesenko floated two explanations: a manufactured political scandal, or a more mundane paid-extraction racket, with an unconfirmed suspicion of Russian intelligence involvement layered on top.

## How a Rumor Became a Riot in Five Hours

The first public call to go to the house appeared on Threads at 11:34. By 13:46, a Telegram post was citing unnamed local media for a figure of 40 people held. Russian outlets, including Ukraina.ru, picked it up by 13:57. From 14:00, 361 Facebook posts ran an identical template — “🤯40 people held in a basement by armed men… four in critical condition” — with a burst of 34 posts adding unsourced detail inside a 40-minute span. The first fact-check, from the broadcaster TSN, did not run until 16:47. By roughly 19:00, about 110 Russian Telegram channels were running their own identical template, calling the house a “concentration camp.” Posts about the incident had gathered more than 4 million views within hours, according to the monitoring service Stop Panika, cited by Euromaidan Press.

Based on [Euromaidan Press, via MP Yaroslav Zhelezniak's channel mapping and Ukraine's Center for Countering Disinformation](https://euromaidanpress.com/2026/11/04/a-fake-torture-chamber-a-real-riot-russia-scores-points-on-ukraines-mobilization-crisis/)

Money moved on at least two tracks, and the accounts of where don’t match. Al Jazeera reported that Moloda had previously been paid 107,000 hryvnia (about $2,355) for a fake “rescue” job; an Azov officer, Pavlo Kurchenko, told Ukrainska Pravda that relatives of one detainee, Andriy Kuleshov, paid Moloda roughly $7,000 this time to get him out. Separately, according to the Substack newsletter of researcher [Marta Havryshko](https://martahavryshko.substack.com/p/dont-discredit-azov-just-dont-ask), Kuleshov’s family says Azov itself demanded 100,000 hryvnia (about $2,400) as an unauthorized “fine” for his release — a claim Azov has not addressed. Kuleshov, 36, had an abdominal stoma from recent surgery; his family says he was held for 37 days and his leg was broken on capture. His relative Tetiana Kirieieva, who paid for his extraction, was arrested alongside Moloda and is held for two months.

The undisputed headcount inside doesn’t fully add up either. Azov’s own commander put it at 18 men being processed before assignment plus 4 held after going AWOL — 22; Kyiv Oblast police counted 26. Four men inside had visible injuries that are still under formal investigation. Azov’s account, relayed by Kurchenko, explains the disciplinary grounds for holding three of the four — one for AWOL, one for alleged drug intoxication and aggression, one for alleged alcohol abuse — but offers no explanation for the injuries themselves. A 14-year-old at the fence is likewise contested: Interior Minister Ivan Vyhivskyi said at a briefing, [per Censor.net](https://censor.net/en/news/4031841/vyhivskyi-denies-torture-chamber-in-petropavlivska-borshchahivka), that the boy “climbed over the fence himself, then fell… nothing happened to him.” Havryshko’s reporting names the boy as Oleksii and relays his account of being struck with a shovel, beaten, and having his clothing cut off.

The crowd outside grew to roughly 500, by Al Jazeera’s count, throwing eggs and tomatoes; Euromaidan Press’s reconstruction adds stones, gas, flares and a bus with smashed windows that was rocked until it nearly overturned, with clashes running past midnight. Sixteen National Guard soldiers were injured outside, none seriously, according to commander Oleksandr Pivnenko. The SBU says it has identified about 100 active participants and opened three criminal cases; Ukraine’s State Bureau of Investigation separately opened a case for a military official “exceeding authority.” Vyhivskyi called the whole episode “a kind of scheme for getting draft dodgers out,” and the SBU said its actual target was a single AWOL serviceman.

The amplification had its own, measurable asymmetry. A post by Alice Weidel, co-leader of Germany’s AfD, repeating the “over 40” claim and noting the youngest detainee was “just 14,” drew about 755,000 views on X. It went up the same day Russian forces dropped nine guided bombs on an underground school and aid point in Komyshuvakha, in Zaporizhzhia Oblast, killing at least 31 people, and a Russian drone killed a 14-year-old girl in Khotiv, near Kyiv. Weidel’s post mentioned neither.

The incident landed on top of a documented, years-long rise in complaints about how Ukraine conscripts men. Complaints to the human rights ombudsman about recruitment-center conduct went from 18 at the start of the full-scale invasion in 2022 to 6,127 in 2025, per Euromaidan Press’s citation of the ombudsman’s figures. The ombudsman has separately documented men held unlawfully for up to 48 days at a recruitment center in Uzhhorod. The outlet Babel has documented more than 20 deaths among mobilized men in the Skelia assault regiment, based on over 30 testimonies. A similar riot in Lviv in July 2026 ended with a crowd overturning a recruitment-office vehicle.

The corruption side of the system has its own paper trail. Ukraine’s acting police chief, Maksym Tsutskiridze, said in August that 76 draft-office leaders had been charged across 428 criminal cases opened since the full-scale invasion began, that 2,500 illegal exemptions had been uncovered, and that police had received 1.5 million requests from enlistment offices to locate suspected draft evaders, [according to the Kyiv Independent](https://kyivindependent.com/76-draft-workers-charged-of-corruption-since-start-of-full-scale-war-2-500-cases-of-illegal-exemption-found-police-chief-says/). In one case the police cited, officials in Kherson charged $7,000 a head to falsify entries in the state Oberih draft registry.

None of this makes Moloda’s staged rescue any more honest, but it explains why so many Ukrainians were primed to believe it on contact. For comparison, the independent Russian outlet Verstka has documented at least 234 Russian soldiers who refused to fight being held in basements in Bryanka, in occupied Luhansk Oblast, guarded by Wagner mercenaries in 2022; Mediazona reported the most resistant were kept in pits and beaten. No comparable prosecution, internal inquiry or public reckoning has followed in Russia. Ukraine’s Interior Ministry, by contrast, opened an internal inquiry into conditions at the Petropavlivska Borshchahivka facility within a day of the riot, running alongside the SBU’s three criminal cases.

Prime Minister Serhii Koretskyi has promised a “new social contract” on mobilization and draft exemptions by December 1. Whether that contract moves the ombudsman’s complaint count, or whether the next fabricated rescue needs even less than the five hours and 25 minutes this one took to reach 110 Russian channels, is the number worth watching.
