## In brief

- Tenerife striker Jesús de Miguel, 30, died Tuesday morning in a Santa Cruz hospital
- He suffered cardiac arrest after a high challenge by FC Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono in stoppage time Monday
- Owono was shown a red card for excessive force; the La Liga 2 match was abandoned
- Owono, 25, has closed his Instagram account amid a social media storm

A second-division footballer is dead in the Canary Islands, and the goalkeeper whose challenge preceded his death has become, overnight, a global figure under judgment. Jesús de Miguel, 30, a forward for Tenerife, died in hospital in Santa Cruz on Tuesday morning, [Al Jazeera’s Alexander Hoad reports](https://aljazeera.com/sports/2026/11/3/who-is-goalkeeper-jesus-owono-and-will-he-be-punished-after-miguels-death), after suffering a cardiac arrest in the wake of a high challenge by FC Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono in stoppage time of Monday’s La Liga 2 match.

The two men had raced for a loose ball near midfield in the last minutes of extra time when Owono jumped toward it and collided with De Miguel, [USA Today reported](https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/soccer/2026/11/03/jesus-de-miguel-dies-on-field-collision-tenerife/92581942007). The referee showed Owono a red card for using excessive force while the ball was in play. The goalkeeper rushed back onto the pitch to help, joined by players from both teams; the match was abandoned, with players in tears. [According to the BBC](https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/articles/ck62yvz046pjo), De Miguel suffered head and chest injuries. He was treated on the pitch and rushed to the Hospital Universitario de Nuestra Señora de Candelaria in Santa Cruz, where Tenerife at first said he was “stable, despite the severity of his condition” in intensive care, [before reporting that his neurological condition had worsened](https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/tenerife-player-jesus-miguel-dies-092128853.html) and he died.

Owono is 25. In the hours since, as Hoad writes, he has faced a social media storm over what, if anything, should happen to a man whose foul — punished already with a red card — ended in the worst outcome a football pitch can produce. He has shut down his Instagram account; his account on X had been inactive for two years.
