Sudan’s military said on Friday that it had captured the town of al-Mazroub in North Kordofan state, a stronghold of the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, in what it described as a step toward cutting the RSF’s supply lines.
In a statement, the Sudanese Armed Forces said fierce battles in the area left casualties among the RSF and destroyed a number of its combat vehicles. The statement gave no casualty figures and no account of army losses. The claim could not be independently verified.
North Kordofan has become one of the war’s main battlegrounds. Nearly two and a half years after fighting began in April 2023, the region has seen about one in five attacks recorded in the conflict, with the state capital, el-Obeid, under repeated pressure.
The army drove the RSF out of Khartoum in March 2025, after which the paramilitary group shifted its campaign to Kordofan and to el-Fasher in North Darfur, which fell to the RSF in October, according to Al Jazeera. In January the military announced a renewed operation to retake Kordofan and Darfur, and in March it said it had retaken the town of Bara and secured the approaches to el-Obeid.
Al-Mazroub sits along the routes the army says it is trying to sever. The military’s statement on Friday framed the capture as part of that campaign, but offered no details on what forces held the town or how long the fighting lasted.
