## In brief

- Poland heightened its air defence posture after repeated alleged incursions into its airspace in recent weeks
- The Polish Air Force began preventive patrols over eastern airspace on September 17
- A Russian Mi-8 helicopter reportedly spent about 42 seconds in Polish airspace on September 23
- Nato condemned Russia’s “reckless actions” over earlier violations of Polish and Romanian airspace

Poland has raised the state of its air defences after weeks of alleged intrusions into its airspace, most of them laid at Russia’s door. On September 17 the Polish Air Force began what it calls preventive air patrols to secure the country’s eastern skies, Al Jazeera reports. The word preventive does the work in that sentence: the fighters are to be in the air before anything crosses the border, not scrambling after it.

The intrusions are not a rumour born of nerves. On September 23 a Russian military Mi-8 helicopter flew into Polish airspace from Kaliningrad and stayed for [about 42 seconds](https://www.stripes.com/theaters/europe/2026-09-24/russian-helicopter-poland-nato-22949648.html) before turning back, according to Stars and Stripes. Polish jets went up to meet it. Officials called the crossing another test of Nato’s air defences, and that is the most economical way to read it: short, timed, deniable.

Nor was it the first such test. Nato’s allies formally condemned Russia’s “reckless actions” over airspace violations touching Poland and Romania [as far back as August](https://www.euronews.com/my-europe/2026/08/12/nato-stands-with-poland-and-romania-amid-russian-airspace-violations), Euronews reported, and the incidents have kept coming since.

All of this unfolds while the war next door grows. The heightened posture comes, as Al Jazeera notes, even as Ukraine strikes Russia during Russian parliamentary voting, and as the front line and the frontier sit ever closer together. [Danish intelligence now treats a limited Russian attack on Nato](https://rews.cc/a/danish-intelligence-sees-a-limited-russian-attack-on-nato-as-0e9af5) as a live risk rather than a classroom exercise.

Official language softens all this into talk of “posture” and “provocations”. Strip the words away and the fact is bare: a Nato government is keeping armed aircraft aloft along its border because it expects more Russian machines to cross it. The crews doing the flying are Polish. So is the airspace.
