- Unsealed body camera video shows Luigi Mangione’s Dec. 2024 arrest at an Altoona, Pa., McDonald’s
- Footage shows questions over a fake ID in the name “Mark Rosario”; a gun was later found in his backpack
- A state judge ruled most of the evidence from the search can be used at trial
- Mangione pleaded guilty to federal stalking charges and faces a December sentencing

Newly unsealed police body camera footage released this week shows the December 2024 arrest of Luigi Mangione at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pa., five days after the UnitedHealthcare C.E.O. Brian Thompson was shot and killed outside a Midtown Manhattan hotel.

The video, obtained by CBS News New York, is the first time the footage has been seen publicly outside a courtroom. It was played at a suppression hearing in December 2025, when Mr. Mangione’s lawyers argued that the police violated his rights by searching his backpack. Officers had answered a 911 call reporting that a man believed to be the shooting suspect was eating breakfast at the restaurant.

In the footage, officers question Mr. Mangione about a fake driver’s license in the name “Mark Rosario.” He later identified himself and told officers he “shouldn’t have” lied about who he was, according to the video.

The video also captures the property search that followed and officers taking Mr. Mangione to the police station, where authorities conducted a strip search. Investigators recovered a firearm from his backpack that prosecutors later linked to the crime scene. A state judge ultimately ruled that most of the evidence from the search could be used at trial.

Richard Shorenstein, a legal expert, told CBS News the officers in the footage do not appear concerned about their safety, even though prosecutors argued the backpack search at the McDonald’s was necessary on safety grounds.

Mr. Mangione has pleaded guilty to federal charges of interstate stalking resulting in death and stalking through use of interstate facilities resulting in death. He also faces state charges of second-degree murder, weapons offenses and forgery; a first-degree murder charge in the state case was thrown out last year.

Sentencing on the federal charges is scheduled for December. A decision on whether the state case will move forward is still pending.
