# Musk’s one-share-per-child pledge: $10.6 billion, if SpaceX’s price holds

## In brief

- Musk pledged one SpaceX share to every US child, worth about $10.6 billion at Monday’s ~$148 closing price
- Trump praised the gift on X, saying shares would go through Trump Accounts child investment accounts
- Musk has not specified eligibility, delivery mechanics, or timing for the transfers next year
- The gift would top Michael and Susan Dell’s $6.25 billion commitment to 25 million children’s accounts
- Musk has given about $276 million to GOP causes since July, including $158 million to the Senate Leadership Fund

One share of SpaceX closed Monday at about $148. There are roughly 72 million children in the United States. Multiply them and Elon Musk’s pledge — ‘Next year, I will give one of my SpaceX shares to every kid in America,’ he wrote on X, adding, ‘This will be the first of many’ — is a commitment worth about $10.6 billion at Monday’s price, as [Business Insider reports](https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-praises-elon-musk-10-billion-spacex-stock-pledge-kids-2026-10). The actual value will be whatever SpaceX trades at when the shares move.

President Trump responded within the day, on X rather than his own Truth Social — a platform he has rarely used since his post-2021 Twitter ban was reversed under Musk’s ownership. ‘A BIG THANK YOU to our legendary friend, Elon Musk,’ he wrote, calling the pledge ‘incredible generosity’ and saying the shares would flow through Trump Accounts, the child investment accounts created under his administration. ‘This is exactly what was envisioned when we created TRUMP ACCOUNTS.’

## What is promised versus what is specified

The pledge is, so far, only a pledge. Musk has not said who counts as a child under the plan, how shares would be deposited into tens of millions of individual accounts, or when in 2027 the transfers would occur. SpaceX is privately held, so ‘the stock’ in question is not something an account holder can sell on an exchange the day it arrives; its value inside a Trump Account would track the company’s private valuations until some liquidity event. None of that is in the announcement.

On scale, the gift would exceed what is currently the program’s largest. Michael and Susan Dell committed $6.25 billion to the accounts of 25 million children, weighted toward lower-income ZIP codes — about $250 per child, against roughly $148 per child in Musk’s version. Musk’s would be bigger unless SpaceX’s share price falls more than about 40 percent before the transfer. Trump anticipated this contribution back in July, saying he expected Musk to donate SpaceX stock even while referring to their public rupture as a ‘little dispute.’ SpaceX president Gwynne Shotwell and her husband have separately pledged shares covering more than 2 million children’s accounts.

## The reconciliation ledger

Musk spent more than $200 million to elect Trump in 2024, served as the public face of the Department of Government Efficiency until May 2025, then attacked the president’s ‘Big, Beautiful Bill’ as a ‘disgusting abomination.’ The thaw is now measurable in money and appearances alike. Since July, Musk has given about $276 million to Republican causes ahead of the midterms, including $158 million to the Senate Leadership Fund; that super PAC in turn sent matching sums to a Texas group backing Attorney General Ken Paxton’s Senate campaign. Earlier this month Trump awarded him the National Medal of Science, and at September’s state dinner for Xi Jinping, Musk sat at the president’s table.

The sequence matters for valuing the gift. A $10.6 billion pledge praised personally by the president costs Musk nothing until the shares move, and its dollar value depends on a private company’s mark, which SpaceX sets through periodic tender offers rather than a market. The figure that will test the pledge is not today’s $148 but the price, the eligibility count, and the transfer mechanism — three numbers Musk’s announcement left blank.
