# Micron and Samsung Say Memory Shortage Will Run Through at Least 2028

*Micron’s chief said 75% of its 2027 output is already spoken for, and prices for that memory are far above 2026 prices*

Executives at Micron and Samsung said this week that the memory-chip shortage will last at least two more years, as factories keep turning their capacity over to the chips that feed artificial intelligence instead of the ones inside phones and laptops.

Sanjay Mehrotra, Micron’s chief executive, told investors on Tuesday night that demand for the company’s memory will exceed what it can supply through that stretch. Micron no longer sells consumer RAM, and Mr. Mehrotra was speaking about its business sales of high-bandwidth memory for A.I. systems and DRAM for servers. The knock-on is direct: production lines devoted to those products are lines that are not making memory for consumer devices.

“Overall, supply-demand environment is only getting tighter,” Mr. Mehrotra said, according to a transcript published by Seeking Alpha. Prices for memory sold for 2027 “are much higher than 2026 prices,” Ars Technica reported.

Micron plans to open new clean rooms for memory production in 2028, but Mr. Mehrotra offered little comfort on the other side of that date. “Even after they are built, even after first wafer output, production ramps up only gradually in the clean rooms,” he said. “That’s just the nature of what it takes to bring up production.” He pointed to the shift in high-bandwidth memory from 3E to a greater mix of 4 and 4E, which he said creates “headwinds with respect to supply growth,” and added that coming generation changes “give less productivity gain per wafer as well.”

Three-quarters of Micron’s memory output for 2027 is already accounted for, Mr. Mehrotra said, and most of the company’s sales talks now concern 2028. Demand for high-bandwidth memory, he said, has passed demand for Micron’s DRAM. The same A.I.-driven appetite is visible across the industry, where it has pushed [South Korea’s chip exports to a record $120.9 billion](https://rews.cc/a/south-korea-exports-jump-83-5-to-a-record-120-9-billion-on-a-fa0a1d).
