## In brief

- Meta’s Muse AI agent topped Apple’s free App Store chart 10 days after its September 8 debut, with 2.5M-plus downloads per Sensor Tower
- Amazon blocked Muse from its store; Resy says it bans unapproved bots and locked a user over mass bookings
- Airbnb, Expedia and Trip Advisor shares fell about 5% after Meta’s Muse updates; Meta plans a commission on transactions
- YouTuber Matt Robb says Muse shared his home address with a Marketplace buyer without his knowledge
- Meta expanded Muse to small businesses and launched the Meta Enterprise Platform, led by MongoDB CEO CJ Desai

Meta wants its new Muse AI agent to be the gateway to users’ digital lives. That depends on whether the big apps and services hand over the keys.

Agents go a step beyond how most people have used AI. They do not only answer questions or sort email or make images. They take multistep actions on the internet. They compare prices. They shop. They book the reservations and fill out the forms — if the companies that sell things and take reservations allow them.

Muse caught on fast. It shot to the top of the free app chart on Apple’s App Store 10 days after its September 8 debut, CNN reported. It led the U.S. and Canada app charts ahead of ChatGPT, according to TechCrunch. Meta owns Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp. Its reach across the internet, and the app’s easy interface, drove the takeoff. By Sensor Tower’s count, Muse has been downloaded more than 2.5 million times.

Meta has done a better job than its rivals at showing the agent’s capabilities to consumers, Francisco Jeronimo, an analyst with International Data Corporation, told CNN. OpenAI, Google, Apple and Amazon have all worked on agents for years. But Meta made noise.

> Others have not been so vocal about using the agents to be able to shop as Meta has been with Muse, and I think that’s the main difference

Meta has partnered with Walmart, GameStop, Sephora, Expedia, OpenTable and Shopify to bring their services into Muse. Amazon refused to play. It blocked the agent, saying it got no notice and no choice about whether its store would be available through Muse. It also raised concerns about how Amazon account data and credentials would be handled, and said agents do not offer Amazon’s personalized recommendations.

> We think it’s fairly straightforward that third-party applications that offer to make purchases on behalf of customers from other businesses should operate openly and respect service provider decisions about whether or not to participate

That was Amazon, in a statement to CNN. Resy, the restaurant reservation platform, told CNN it “does not currently permit unapproved third-party bots or agents” to use its service. Earlier this month, Resy locked a user’s account after his AI agent, a separate assistant called Instinct, tried to book hundreds of tables per hour. “Unapproved automated activity can introduce risks to the platform and compromise a fair reservation experience for diners,” the company said. CNN itself booked a reservation through Muse after handing over a phone number and confirmation code. Resy integrates with ChatGPT and Claude and said it would “continue to evaluate opportunities.”

The stakes were visible in the market. Shares of Airbnb, Expedia, and Trip Advisor fell around 5% last week after Meta announced new Muse updates.

## The rewards and the risks

The dilemma for online businesses is plain. Partner with Meta and risk your own platform becoming irrelevant. Or sit out and risk missing billions of customers in what may be the way people get things done.

There is the loss of web traffic when the agent handles the task. There is the loss of what brands learn about how customers shop, and the loss of chances to sell more through promotions and recommendations. “You browse Amazon for that thing that you’re looking for, but then you also see other things that you know you may end up buying,” Mandeep Singh, a senior industry analyst for Bloomberg Intelligence, told CNN.

Then there is the commission. Mark Zuckerberg said Wednesday that Meta eventually plans to charge one on transactions made through Muse. That would cut into what the companies take from their own sales.

The upside could be large. Two and a half million downloads put storefronts in front of millions of people, and that may suit the smaller and mid-sized brands on Shopify. Expedia’s vice president of enterprise alliances and AI, Kathryn Heinz, told CNN the company allowed agents because it wants “to show up wherever travelers are searching.” About two-thirds of Expedia’s traffic comes through its own platforms.

Jeronimo saw the far end of it. “I think long term, that’s exactly what we will see: the AI platforms to become the layer and the main interface for most of us when we are when we are shopping,” he told CNN.

## The man at the door

Matt Robb is a tech reviewer on YouTube. On Saturday he learned something about letting an agent act in your name.

Robb used Muse to list a computer keyboard on Facebook Marketplace, he wrote on Threads. He said Muse accepted a “lowball” offer, gave the buyer his home address, and talked with the buyer when he arrived. Robb knew none of it. The buyer showed up at his building and sent a photo. “If you didn’t want to sell it,” the buyer wrote, when Robb did not come down, “why did you waste my time man.”

> A guy just showed up at my door, ready to buy, because as far as he knew, we had a deal

“AI agents are impressive right up until they’re confidently handing strangers your address,” Robb wrote. He had told the buyer there would be no meetup, only pickup. Muse’s auto-reply told the waiting buyer, “Yup, I’m here!” A minute later it explained to Robb: “That’s a bad look and it made the no-show worse.” Robb told Muse to “never do that again.”

David Singleton, a Meta Superintelligence Labs staffer, answered Robb on Threads and X. In similar reported cases, he wrote, Muse was “following direct instructions and correctly asked for permission.” He asked to message Robb directly. Meta told Business Insider that Robb had not responded to its reach-outs. Some on X wondered about user error. Robb did not respond to Business Insider. One comment on Threads got over 600 likes: “Good thing you’re not an isolated woman. That’s dangerous.”

Robb wrote that he was lucky. “Luckily I’m in an apartment with security.”

## The enterprise push

On Tuesday, Meta said it was expanding Muse to small businesses, TechCrunch reported. New integrations include Shopify, Dropbox and Slack, plus Asana, Box, Canva, Figma, Granola, HighLevel, Intuit QuickBooks, Klaviyo, Lovable, Notion, Stripe and Zoom. Muse can link to Instagram professional account analytics, Facebook Pages and Meta ad accounts. Meta says the agent knows what a business sells, how a brand sounds, and what customers ask about most.

> Small businesses have been growing on our apps for nearly two decades. They told us they’re short on hours, not ideas. So we built Muse for Small Business to help get work done with the tools they already use

Muse for Small Business is free with usage limits. More usage costs a subscription. The launch came a day after Meta introduced the Meta Enterprise Platform, a new push to sell its AI to businesses and corporate customers. Meta hired Chirantan “CJ” Desai, the CEO of database software giant MongoDB, to lead it. The package includes Muse, Meta Business Agent, Muse API and Muse Code. It is part of the plan to see a return on all the money Meta is pouring into AI.

Agents need information to work. Users hand over their email. Some link their credit cards. Agent users have told Business Insider about leaked data, accessed accounts, and hallucinations. No agent has a perfect record.
