## In brief

- Geely’s 2.2 MW chargers, announced a week earlier, are in service in Hangzhou, Shanghai, Ningbo, Jiaxing and Xi’an
- Each unit can feed two cars over a megawatt at once; no car sold yet accepts the full 1,500 volts
- Geely plans 15,000 charging sites by end-2027; BYD installed 10,000 1.5 MW chargers in five months
- EVgo’s 750 kW chargers, promised for the second half of 2026, are now due in the United States in 2027
- Tesla’s Semi Megacharger runs at 1.2 MW, below the consumer systems from BYD and Geely

Geely’s newest electric vehicle chargers, which the Chinese automaker says can fill a battery in less than five minutes, are already running in five Chinese cities, only a week after the company announced them, Electrek reported on Tuesday.

The chargers are in service in Hangzhou, Shanghai, Ningbo, Jiaxing and Xi’an, according to CarNewsChina, which cited reporting by National Business Daily. Geely says it will build 15,000 charging sites by the end of next year.

The 2.2-megawatt rating is shared between two charging heads. Each unit runs at 1,500 volts and 1,500 amps, but no car on sale yet accepts a 1,500-volt charge, so two vehicles can each draw more than one megawatt at the same time. The company says an advanced thermal-control algorithm helps protect battery life, a consideration when pushing that much power into a battery that quickly.

The pace matters as much as the power. Geely released a 1.5-megawatt charger in March; the new model arrived six months later. BYD moved at a similar clip after announcing its own 1.5-megawatt system in March, installing 10,000 chargers within five months, according to Electrek. China already has tens of thousands of megawatt-level chargers that can charge a car in five to 10 minutes, and its companies now compete over seconds, not minutes.

Geely has also hedged its bet on charging speed, taking a partial stake in NIO’s battery-swapping unit, an investment Electrek put at $2 billion.

The fastest charger on the way in the United States runs at about a third of that power. EVgo, a charging network, said on Sept. 29 that it would bring 750-kilowatt chargers to the country in 2027, about twice the speed of the current state of the art and enough to charge an EV in roughly 10 minutes, assuming the car can take it. So far, the coming Mercedes-AMG GT is the only American-market EV built for numbers like that.

The EVgo plan began with a partnership in 2024 that promised the chargers in the second half of 2026. That window has arrived, and the launch has instead moved to 2027.

Elsewhere in the American market, Tesla announced its 500-kilowatt V4 Supercharger in 2022, and the first units took about three years to reach the road. Most American Superchargers are still capped at 350 kilowatts or less, which Elon Musk, the company’s chief executive, once called a “children’s toy,” Electrek noted. Tesla’s Megacharger for its Semi truck runs at 1.2 megawatts, less than the consumer systems from BYD and Geely.

Electrek, which covers the industry, laid part of the American lag on policy: charging programs created under President Joseph R. Biden Jr. have run into funding fights at the state and federal levels, the site wrote, while tariffs, expanded under Mr. Biden and kept since, and efforts to bar Chinese cars from the American market have walled off the technology altogether.

EVgo’s 750-kilowatt chargers are now scheduled for 2027. By the end of that year, Geely says, its 15,000 sites will be in place.
