## In brief

- CENTCOM has drawn up options for renewed strikes on Iran, awaiting possible White House authorisation, The Hill reports
- Saudi, Turkish and Pakistani delegations from the Mecca Defence Alliance are due in Tehran on Monday for talks
- It is the first high-level contact between Iran and the bloc since Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia escalated
- Attendees include Saudi Defence Minister Khalid bin Salman, Pakistan’s Asim Munir and Turkey’s Ibrahim Kalin
- Israel holds its first election since October 7, 2023 on Tuesday, with Netanyahu facing trial, war and a restive far-right bloc

The Middle East war is approaching its eighth month, and the week opens with two competing mechanisms running in parallel: strike planning and shuttle diplomacy. The US Central Command, which oversees American forces in the region, has drawn up options for renewed attacks on Iran, [Al Jazeera reported, citing The Hill](https://aljazeera.com/news/2026/10/25/centcom-reportedly-has-plans-for-iran-strikes-will-trump-approve-them). The plans are reportedly ready to execute if the White House authorises them, and military planners have prepared several options for Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. Neither outlet reported a decision; The Hill’s account, per Al Jazeera, frames the question as whether Trump will approve strikes, not whether he has.

The qualifier matters: ‘options ready if authorised’ is the standard end-state of military planning, not evidence of intent. CENTCOM keeps contingency plans for most conceivable targets as a matter of course. What The Hill’s reporting adds is specificity — several options, prepared for the Defense Secretary, less than a year into an already-running war — but read against that baseline, the new fact is the authorisation question sitting in the White House, not the existence of the plans themselves.

## Three delegations, one room in Tehran

On the other track, delegations from the Mecca Defence Alliance — Saudi Arabia, Turkiye and Pakistan — are due in Tehran on Monday for talks, [Al Jazeera reported](https://aljazeera.com/news/2026/10/26/officials-from-mecca-pact-states-to-hold-talks-in-iran-amid-regional-tensions), citing Saudi and Iranian officials and Turkish state media. It is the first high-level contact between Iran and the bloc since Houthi rebels escalated their attacks on Saudi Arabia, a sequencing detail that explains the guest list: all three countries sit downstream of the Houthis’ reach.

The attendance list is senior and skews toward security portfolios rather than foreign ministries. Ali Bagheri Kani, deputy secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, was quoted by Iranian state-run media as naming the participants: Saudi Defence Minister Khalid bin Salman Al Saud, Pakistani military chief Asim Munir and Turkish intelligence chief Ibrahim Kalin, all in a joint meeting. Sending a defence minister, an army chief and an intelligence head — rather than diplomats — reads as a working-level security discussion, consistent with the Houthi escalation being the trigger. Whether a defence pact containing three states can extract anything Iran controls in Tehran is a different question; Iran’s influence over Houthi targeting decisions is widely asserted and rarely demonstrated in public.

## Israel votes in the middle of it

Israelis vote on Tuesday in legislative elections, the country’s first since the Hamas-led attacks of October 7, 2023 and the subsequent war in Gaza, which Al Jazeera characterises in its reporting as a [genocidal war against Palestinians](https://aljazeera.com/news/2026/10/26/israels-election-five-key-things-to-know). The vote is being called one of the most important in Israel’s history — an easy superlative to attach to almost any Israeli election, but this one carries unusual load.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu goes into the vote carrying three simultaneous weights, per Al Jazeera’s election guide: his ongoing trial, the war, and a far-right bloc his coalition depends on. Any of the three alone has ended Israeli governments before; the election tests whether all three together can. The outcome also feeds directly into the other two stories of the week: a returned Netanyahu government, or a reshuffled one, inherits both the Gaza war and whatever Washington decides about the CENTCOM options.

So the week offers three clocks. In Tehran, whether Monday’s meeting produces a statement, a mechanism or nothing. In Washington, whether strike options stay options — that decision is unilateral and can move on any news cycle. In Israel, turnout and seat counts on Tuesday will fix which government negotiates over all of it. The first number to watch is the simplest: how many days pass between the Tehran meeting and any Iranian or Houthi response that the Saudis can measure.
