# Canva Cuts 1,271 Jobs, 22% of Staff, After AI Costs Ate Its Growth

*A $42bn design company’s first-ever layoff round follows a revenue forecast cut from 30% to 20%*

## In brief

- Canva told 1,271 staff, 22% of its global workforce, their roles are changing, ending or relocating
- The figure mixes layoffs, role changes and relocations; Canva has not split out the net redundancy count
- Departing staff get 6 months’ salary, 12 months of healthcare, and $10,000 grants from a new Collective Fund
- Canva cut its 2026 revenue growth guidance from 30% to 20% in August after AI compute costs rose sharply
- Investor marks on Canva’s valuation range from $42bn to $31bn depending on holder, method and date

Canva told 1,271 people on 4 November that their jobs are changing, ending, or moving to a different office. That is 22% of a global workforce the company put at “more than 5,300” people as recently as May, according to its own newsroom. The arithmetic implied by Canva’s own percentage — 1,271 divided by 0.22 — puts total headcount closer to 5,780, so either the company has kept hiring even as it plans the cuts, or 22% is a round number. Either way, it is the first contraction in the 13-year history of a company that grew, on its own account, from a founding team of five in 2013. Bloomberg was first to report the restructuring and its scale.

Co-founder and chief executive Melanie Perkins did not call the 1,271 figure a layoff number, because it is not one. It bundles people being made redundant with people whose roles are changing and people being asked to relocate to a central hub. Canva has not said how many of the 1,271 fall into each category, which means the actual redundancy count — the number that matters to anyone trying to size the cut against peers — is still unpublished. In [its own account of the restructuring](https://www.canva.com/newsroom/news/canva-team-update/), titled “An important update on our team,” the company frames the ambiguity as a feature of the plan rather than a gap in the disclosure.

> This is without doubt the hardest moment in our thirteen-year history.

## The mechanism of the reorg

The structural change is specific enough to describe. Canva is merging three units — Product, Growth and Platform — into one product organisation, and removing a layer of management in the process, according to [ABC News](https://www.abc.net.au/news/2026-11-04/canva-restructure-job-losses/107344304) and [Bloomberg](https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2026-11-03/canva-announces-layoffs-job-changes-for-about-22-of-workforce). Narrow specialist roles are being folded into broader ones. Sydney becomes the primary hub for more of the company’s product teams, and from January 2027 most hybrid staff are expected in an office two to three days a week, reversing the more distributed arrangement Canva had allowed. Perkins described the goal as returning to “small, empowered teams with the freedom to make decisions,” which is the kind of language that accompanies most reorgs; what is verifiable is the org chart change itself, not whether it delivers the speed the memo promises.

For those leaving, Canva has attached numbers to the exit. Departing staff get at least six months’ salary including statutory entitlements, 12 months of continued healthcare coverage where Canva already provided it, 12 months of access to its employee assistance programme, a year of LinkedIn Premium, one-on-one career coaching and interview preparation, and they keep the company-issued MacBook, per [HCA Mag’s](https://www.hcamag.com/us/news/general/canva-job-cuts-affect-1271-roles-in-first-redundancy-round/596052) rundown of the package. Canva is also removing the one-year cliff on equity vesting, so recent hires don’t lose stock they would otherwise have forfeited, and launching a Canva Collective Fund that pays departing staff grants of US$10,000 toward a new venture or community project, taking no equity in return. A company-wide meeting on 10 November is where the net redundancy number, if it is disclosed at all, would presumably surface.

## What AI costs did to the growth rate

The restructuring follows a growth-rate cut that Canva announced on 3 August: 2026 revenue growth guidance down from 30% to 20%, a one-third reduction, after June-quarter revenue of $921.9 million — up 25.2% year on year but short of Canva’s internal target, as [TechCrunch reported](https://techcrunch.com/2026/11/04/canva-lays-off-over-1200-people-amid-slowing-growth/). The company’s annual recurring revenue had reportedly passed $4 billion the previous September, per comments from co-founder and COO Cliff Obrecht. The gap between a quarter growing at 25% and a full-year guide cut to 20% is the first visible crack in a decade of compounding growth.

Perkins told Fortune, in remarks relayed by [Yahoo Finance](https://finance.yahoo.com/technology/ai/articles/canva-rare-startup-grew-fast-201427317.html), that demand for Canva AI 2.0, launched in April 2026, “significantly exceeded” the company’s expectations. The problem was cost, not demand: most Canva users are on the free tier, and a large share of their AI requests were being routed to frontier models — the most capable, and most expensive, systems built by labs like OpenAI. Serving each AI task cost more than the free-tier business could sustain at scale. Canva says it has since cut the cost per AI task by nearly 90% since the April launch while usage on the new version tripled, with users creating three times as many designs as on the prior version. Pitchbook analyst Derek Hernandez, cited in the same report, put Canva alongside Figma — whose free-cash-flow margin fell to 14% from 27% in a single quarter — as the clearest evidence that AI inference cost is breaking software’s old assumption of near-zero marginal cost per user.

> This validated the demand, but also showed us we needed to reduce the cost of completing an AI task to support a broad rollout.

## Who thinks Canva is worth what

The growth cut triggered a round of valuation markdowns that disagree with each other by billions of dollars, because each comes from a different holder using a different method at a different date in 2026. At the start of the year, major shareholders priced Canva around $42 billion. By the June quarter, Franklin Templeton had marked its holding down 6.3% to $39.3 billion and T. Rowe Price down 9.1% to $38.2 billion, according to [Forbes Australia’s](https://www.forbes.com.au/news/innovation/canva-valuation-marked-down-by-us-titans-t-rowe-price-and-franklin-templeton/) reading of their fund filings. By August, early venture backers Blackbird and Airtree, after commissioning an independent valuation, cut their mark by 17% to $34.9 billion, as [Capital Brief reported](https://www.capitalbrief.com/article/12-billion-or-even-less-as-offshore-investors-air-canva-doubts-australias-top-vcs-mark-it-down-c51164d9-eb52-4bcc-89c9-120d375f8598/). Canva’s own internal valuer — used to price its annual employee share issuance, a more conservative, tax-driven calculation rather than a market offer — cut further still, from $38.9 billion to $31 billion over the same year.

**Nobody agrees what Canva is worth** Implied valuation by holder and date, 2026, $bn

| | Implied valuation ($bn) |
| --- | --- |
| Jan 2026 (start-of-year mark) | 42 |
| Franklin Templeton (30 Jun) | 39.3 |
| T. Rowe Price (30 Jun) | 38.2 |
| Blackbird & Airtree (Aug) | 34.9 |
| Canva's own employee-share valuer | 31 |

Marks are not directly comparable: fund filings, a commissioned independent valuation, and Canva's internal tax-driven valuer use different methods and dates.

The spread between $42 billion and $31 billion — a 26% gap — is the size of the disagreement over whether a design tool that now competes with image generation built into ChatGPT and Gemini for free still commands software multiples. [HubSpot cut 660 jobs](https://rews.cc/a/hubspot-cuts-660-jobs-says-it-s-not-the-ai-efficiencies-ever-c490e8) last month and, like Canva, declined to frame it as an AI-efficiency story outright; Canva’s memo mentions “new technology” changing what people expect from products without naming AI as the cause of the cuts, even as its own AI compute bill is the documented reason its growth forecast came down. Atlassian cut 1,600 jobs in March, 480 of them in Australia, during the same stretch of Australian tech retrenchment that Canva now joins for the first time in its history.

Canva has published a restructuring with a headline percentage, a severance schedule, and an org chart. It has not published the one number that would let anyone outside the company check its size against Atlassian’s or WiseTech’s cuts: how many of the 1,271 affected people are actually losing a job, as opposed to changing desks. That number, if it comes, is due at the 10 November all-hands — along with whatever Canva can show for a 90% cut in AI task cost against a free-tier user base that keeps finding cheaper ways to make a poster.
