# Anthropic Lost $80.7 Billion in Six Months, $72 Billion of It on Paper

*A draft IPO prospectus ties most of the record loss to revalued fundraising instruments and lifts possible compute spending to $750 billion*

## In brief

- Anthropic posted a net loss above $80B in H1 2026, the WSJ reported, citing a draft IPO prospectus
- $72B of the loss is accounting charges on convertible notes and other fundraising instruments; the prior year lost $13B
- Anthropic could spend up to $750B on computing in coming years, up from $600B in an earlier draft
- The company is pursuing an IPO reported in the $1.5–2T range that could arrive as early as November

Anthropic recorded a net loss of more than $80 billion in the first half of 2026, the Wall Street Journal reported on Tuesday, citing a draft prospectus for the AI company’s planned initial public offering, as [Al Jazeera relayed](https://aljazeera.com/news/2026/10/21/anthropic-posts-80bn-loss-in-first-half-of-2026-wsj). Reuters’ account of the same Journal story puts the figure at $80.7 billion, up from $13 billion in the first half of 2025 — a 6.2-fold increase in twelve months for the maker of the Claude chatbot.

Almost none of that loss is cash out the door. According to the Journal’s reporting, $72 billion of it — about 89 percent — comes from accounting charges tied to changes in the value of convertible notes and other instruments Anthropic issued to raise funding, per [Reuters’ write-up](https://www.charlotteobserver.com/news/business/article317704792.html). Subtract the charges and the residual loss is roughly $8.7 billion for six months. That residual is the number closer to what the business actually consumed, though the reporting does not say how much of the prior year’s $13 billion was also accounting charges, so a clean year-over-year comparison of operating burn is not yet public.

## The loss is the valuation, restated

The mechanism works like this. Convertible notes and similar instruments issued to investors sit on the issuer’s balance sheet as liabilities carried at fair value. When the company’s implied value rises, the liability rises with it, and the increase runs through the income statement as an expense. The company loses billions on paper precisely because its paper became more valuable. Anthropic’s valuation has been climbing as it raises ahead of [an IPO reported in the range of $1.5–2 trillion](https://rews.cc/a/anthropic-opens-its-systems-to-an-outside-ai-watchdog-with-l-d5af8d), so the charge is enormous. A declining company would book the same line as a gain, which tells you what this metric measures.

The second number in the draft prospectus is forward-looking in a different way. Anthropic could spend up to $750 billion on additional computing capacity in the coming years, including potential deals still under discussion, according to the Journal’s reporting as [carried by Business Standard](https://www.business-standard.com/amp/technology/artificial-intelligence/anthropic-may-spend-750-billion-on-computing-costs-as-ipo-plans-advance-126102100107_1.html). An earlier draft had put the figure at $600 billion; the update added $150 billion of headroom. “Could” and “up to” do the work in that sentence: $750 billion is a ceiling over an unstated number of years, partly still under negotiation, not money spent.

This is the second disclosure cycle from Anthropic’s IPO paperwork in a month. An earlier draft already showed [a $42 billion net loss for 2025](https://rews.cc/a/anthropic-prospectus-shows-42-billion-net-loss-ahead-of-poss-6f7244) alongside a warning that AI could pose an existential risk to humanity, and the listing [could arrive as early as November](https://rews.cc/a/anthropic-would-like-100-billion-for-the-ai-its-ceo-says-sho-695b9d), which would make it the largest IPO on record. At the reported valuation range, public investors would be buying a company whose last disclosed six months burned roughly $8.7 billion beyond the accounting noise, against compute plans it prices in the hundreds of billions.

When the prospectus is filed publicly, the figures that matter are the ones this draft does not yet show: revenue for the period, operating loss with fair-value charges stripped out, and how much of the $750 billion is signed commitment versus conversation. The $80.7 billion headline will travel further than any of them.
