## In brief

- A Gulfstream G100 air ambulance with six people aboard vanished from radar early Saturday off Nantucket
- The four crew members are Canadian; the patient and a relative are Bermudian
- The pilot reported electrical failures, and the jet dropped 13,000 feet in three minutes before contact was lost
- The Coast Guard is searching with two airplanes, a helicopter, a cutter and a lifeboat
- Operator Latitude Air Ambulance of Hamilton, Ontario, says it has never before lost contact with a plane

A medical jet carrying six people disappeared from radar early Saturday after reporting electrical failures on a flight from Bermuda to Boston, and the United States Coast Guard spent the day searching the Atlantic off Nantucket without finding it.

The Gulfstream G100, tail number C-GRJP, was operated by Latitude Air Ambulance of Hamilton, Ontario. On board were two pilots and two medical staff members, all Canadian, along with a patient and a family member who are Bermudian, according to Clarence Togeretz, the company’s director of flight operations.

The jet left L.F. Wade International Airport at 11:41 p.m. Friday for the 800-mile flight to Boston, said Ciara Eve, an airport spokeswoman. For most of the flight it cruised at about 24,000 feet. Then, as it approached Nantucket, the pilot reported electrical failures, according to radio transmissions. FlightAware data show that at about 1:04 a.m. the plane descended 13,000 feet in three minutes. Around 1:06 a.m., some 80 miles south of the island, it vanished from radar.

“You’re coming in a little weak so I didn’t hear what your response was, if you were declaring an emergency or not,” an air traffic controller told the pilot. He later confirmed an emergency had been declared but could not get contact back. A dispatcher at Logan International Airport, expecting the plane within 15 minutes, ordered crews onto the runway. At 1:20 a.m., the Federal Aviation Administration issued a search and rescue alert; at 2 a.m., it notified the Coast Guard.

“I don’t know if you monitored the tower radio, but the tower lost radar contact with this aircraft,” the Massport Fire Rescue commander radioed at about 1:36 a.m. The runway crews were sent back to their headquarters.

By midday the search involved an HC-144 Ocean Sentry airplane, an HC-130 Hercules, an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter, a 47-foot motor lifeboat and the fast response cutter William Sparling, the Coast Guard said. At sunrise, Nantucket police and the harbormaster rode ATVs along the island’s southern shoreline looking for signs of the plane, said Lieutenant Angus MacVicar. The airport had been told the jet declared an emergency before losing contact, a spokesman, Preston Harimon, said in a statement, adding: “Nantucket Memorial Airport will not speculate on the cause of the event.”

Mr. Togeretz said Latitude, which flies medical evacuations to more than 120 countries, had never before lost contact with one of its planes. “We’re dealing with the situation with as much positivity and optimism as we can,” he said. “We’re praying for a safe outcome.”

Premier David Burt of Bermuda said his government was in touch with the families and American search crews. “We are praying that all six people will be found safe,” he said. Gov. Maura Healey of Massachusetts, speaking at a labor rally in Dorchester, said the state would “do whatever we can as a state to support efforts there and work with the Coast Guard.”

John Gradek, an aviation management lecturer at McGill University, told CBC the searchers likely had a good fix from the plane’s emergency locator transmitter and were probably working a grid of about 100 square miles around it. “In these types of situations with a fairly tight search pattern, they’re able to find and resolve the state of the aircraft fairly quickly,” he said.

Global Affairs Canada said consular officials were in contact with local authorities and ready to assist the Canadians’ families, and the Transportation Safety Board of Canada said it was gathering information. As darkness fell on Saturday, the Coast Guard had no word on the jet’s location.
