## In brief

- A DOJ filing referred to Rep. Ilhan Omar as “Ilhan Nur Said Elmi, a/k/a Ilhan Abdullahi Omar”
- Trump called for Omar’s resignation, reviving identity-fraud allegations
- The filing came a week after federal agents searched Omar’s Washington home
- Omar’s office says the name claim is false; she called Trump a “creep”
- Omar, a Somali-born Democrat elected in 2018, is running for reelection in Minnesota

Power has always understood the uses of a name. To rename a person is to claim the right to define her — and in Washington this week, the definition arrived not on a campaign poster but inside a Justice Department court filing, four terse words of legal Latin attached to a sitting member of Congress.

As [Al Jazeera reported](https://aljazeera.com/news/2026/10/23/why-is-trump-questioning-ilhan-omars-name), President Donald Trump has called on Democratic Representative Ilhan Omar of Minnesota to resign from Congress, reviving allegations of identity fraud after the DOJ filing, submitted Wednesday, referred to her as “Ilhan Nur Said Elmi, a/k/a Ilhan Abdullahi Omar” — “a/k/a” being the abbreviation for “also known as.”

The filing did not come from nowhere. According to [The Hill](https://thehill.com/homenews/administration/6167516-trump-demands-omar-resignation-name/), prosecutors referred to the Minnesota Democrat as “Congresswoman Ilhan Nur Said Elmi” without explanation, in a court filing that came a week after [federal agents searched her Washington home](https://rews.cc/a/federal-agents-search-rep-ilhan-omar-s-home-in-criminal-inve-a6d3c9) — a dawn raid that had already pushed the investigation of a sitting lawmaker past customs the Justice Department has long observed in election season. The name appeared in a sealed-warrant motion from US Attorney Jeanine Pirro’s office, [Headlines & Global News reported](https://www.hngn.com/articles/273577/20261023/trump-demands-omar-resign-after-doj-filing-lists-her-under-another-name.htm), adding that Omar’s office says the name claim is false.

The allegation itself is not new; only its venue is. Claims that Omar — born in Somalia, a refugee of its civil war, elected to Congress in 2018 — entered public life under a name other than her own have circulated among her political enemies for years, without ever being proven. What has changed is that the machinery of the state has begun to move with them: a criminal investigation, grand jury subpoenas that, as [rews reported earlier this month](https://rews.cc/a/us-investigators-subpoena-ilhan-omar-s-relatives-in-probe-ai-9282d3), have reached her own relatives, and now the prosecutor’s pen writing a second name beside hers as if it were established fact.

Omar answered in the idiom of the street, not the chamber. [Fox News reported](https://www.foxnews.com/politics/ilhan-omar-calls-trump-creep-president-revives-fake-name-marriage-allegations) that she called Trump a “creep” after he demanded her resignation — the demand itself having followed Fox News Digital’s own report that her birth name is Ilhan Nur Said Elmi, attributed to two people familiar with the matter. She is running for reelection in Minnesota and, a day after Trump’s call, turned her fire on both the president and the Justice Department officials behind the filing, [Newsweek noted](https://www.newsweek.com/trump-calls-for-omar-resignation-12608536).

It is worth pausing on the asymmetry. A name typed into a sealed motion costs a clerk nothing. For the woman named, it becomes a headline, a duty to respond, a fresh season of suspicion — the burden of proof quietly reassigned. Whether the filing reflects evidence or accusation is a question the courts, not the rallies, will have to answer. Omar’s office calls it false. The president has already moved past the question to the demand.
